Oh dear, fellow academic colleague Shing Au -Yeung has reposted on facebook a shaggier (reference to the hair people) me back two years ago while I was running digital stories workshops for the Australian-Cambodian community at Information & Cultural Exchange (ICE).
Here's just a snapshot taken while I was explaining the to young people of the importance of storytelling and if we focus, we can see that that the derive from certain aspects of our lives.
So this year, straight after the "Quest" I've plunged myself into more teaching/ facilitating at Powerhouse Youth Theatre a group of high schoolers for the next 2 months as they prepare to submit a group short film to the 2011 Shortcut's Film Festival. I think I can never get rid of facilitating. In fact, I love the juggle of working between the two worlds; of being an artist (film and acting) as well as a facilitator. The latter keeps me grounded and connected to what's real and what matters. I think sometimes, the honchos who determine what goes on in our cinemas get so so bloody wrong in terms of content that captures the audience.
The kids that I work with reminds me that the real stories are the ones on the grassroots level and those that come from the heart.
Now, that doesn't mean stories have to be boring, heart rendering sappy puppy stuff, it can still have a lot of kick ass action too!
